„Gli Ultimi Pescatori“ ist ein Projekt des sizilianischen Fotografen Francesco Bellina, das den Niedergang von Klein­fischerei und Hafenstädten dokumentiert – in Sizilien, ­Tunesien und Ghana. In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten ist die Arbeit von Fischer:innen in aller Welt immer schwieriger und prekärer geworden. Trotz langer Arbeitszeiten zu undankbaren Stunden, oft unter gefährlichen Bedingungen, bringen sie immer weniger Fang an Land. Der Einfluss der globalen Erwärmung auf empfindliche Ökosysteme und die groß angelegte industrielle Fischerei haben die Meere ausgelaugt und sowohl die Fischer:innen als auch die Umwelt verarmen lassen. Der Fotograf Francesco Bellina und der Journalist und Filmemacher Stefano Liberti verweben die einzelnen Geschichten der Fischer:innen zu einer grenzübergreifenden Landkarte und erforschen die Handelsrouten und Systeme der Meere. Ein Blick auf das mediterrane Kultur­gut und seinen aktuellen Platz in globalen Netzwerken.

“Gli Ultimi Pescatori“ is a major new multimedia installation by Francesco Bellina. It investigates the decay of small-scale fish­eries and port communities through human stories that reveal the localised economic scarcity of globalisation, exploitation, and the connection between three seemingly remote places: Sicily, Tunisia and Ghana. In the last two decades, the work of fishermen across the world has become increasingly difficult and precarious. Working lengthy hours at unthankful times, often in dangerous conditions, they yield less and less catch. The influence of global warming on delicate ecosystems together with large-scale industrial fishing practices have emptied the oceans, impoverishing both fishermen and the environment. While these are ­global phenomena, their consequences are highly localised and can be observed in various port cities in Europe, Africa and beyond. Weaving the single stories of fishermen into a transnational map, the Sicilian photographer Francesco Bellina, together with the investigative journalist and filmmaker Stefano Liberti, explores the trade routes and systems which govern the sea, thus offering a novel view on Mediterranean cultural heritage and its current place within global networks.
