Mare Nostrum II. Secrets of the Infinite Sea

Die libanesische Künstlerin, Performerin und Marathonläuferin Lily Abichahine setzt sich in Mare Nostrum mit dem Verhältnis der Menschen zum Meer und seinen Küsten auseinander. In einer Reihe von Residenzen recherchiert und filmt sie rund ums Mittelmeer und sucht Bezüge zu mythologischen Stoffen. Was verbindet die Anrainer über die zum Teil tödlichen Grenzen hinweg? Der erste Teil ihrer Arbeit, „Choreography for a Woman and a Stone“, entstand 2021 unter Bezug zum Sisyphos-Mythos in Beirut und Palermo. Im zweiten Teil, „Secrets of the Infinite Sea“, beschäftigt sie sich mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Izmir und Marseille, der Geschichte der Migration – und mit Prometheus. Als „Haruspex“ setzt sie sich mit der antiken Praxis des Wahrsagens als „Leber-Schau“ auseinander.

Having grown up on one of the basin’s shores, Lily Abichahine leads within her project Mare Nostrum a series of residencies held on several coasts. For the second chapter, and building on residencies in Izmir and Marseille, the artist traces a connection between these cities, reminding us of invisible links among various Mediterranean contexts. Exploring both reality and mythology, she tackles the myth of Prometheus. She transforms herself into a contemporary haruspice and tells the story of migration from ancient to contemporary times, offering to her audience a reading of the future that mixes facts with dark humour, in the form of text, video and sound.
