The Journey

Die Künstlerin Rossella Biscotti bekam einen 20 Tonnen schweren Marmorblock als Preis (Premio Michelangelo 2010). Sie lud ihn auf ein Boot und übergab ihm dem Mittelmeer. Die symbolische Schifffahrt verlief zwischen Italien, ­Malta, Tunesien und Libyen und orientierte sich, GPS-basiert, an Linien wie z.B. einer geologischen Spalte, den Grenzen zwischen Öl- und Gaskonzessionen, dem Patrouillenlinien der Europäischen Grenzschutzagentur FRONTEX. Der Klangkünstler Attila Faravelli begleitete Rossella Biscotti, aus dem aufgenommenen Ton entstand eine immersive 8-Kanal-Klangkomposition und Performance, die beim „Kunstenfestivaldesarts“ in Brüssel und bei der „Dream City Biennale“ in Tunis gezeigt wurde. Das Summen von Motoren, die Brandung des Meeres, die Lieder von Seeleuten und Fischer:innen, die Resonanzen aus dem Inneren uralter Amphoren und unsichtbarer Meeresbewohner verschmelzen zu einer Reise der Klänge. In ihrer Lecture präsentieren Rossella Biscotti und Attila Faravelli das Projekt „The Journey“ und einige ihrer Aufnahmen.

In 2010 I was awarded a 20-ton block of marble. In May 2021, this rock was extracted and loaded onto a boat that sailed on a symbolic route between Italy, Malta, Tunisia and Libya, releasing the marble block into the Mediterranean Sea. The GPS based route was designed to highlight points of interest – from a geological rift to nautical borders demarcating oil and gas concessions, areas of military operations, or the migration of a sea-turtle crossing the patrolling lines of the European Border Agency FRONTEX. I asked the sound artist Attila Faravelli to accompany me along this route. The sound we recorded, beginning with the extraction of the marble, then along the shores of Malta and Tunisia finally leading to a location in the middle of the sea, has been edited in an immersive eight channel sonic composition as well as sonic performance presented at “Kunstenfestivaldesarts” in Brussels and “Dream City Festival” in Tunis in 2022. The hum of engines, the ceaseless sea churn, the songs of seafarers and fishermen, the resonances from the inside of ancient amphorae and invisible marine creatures are arranged in a seamless sonic journey. In the lecture we will present the project “The Journey” including a listening session of some of the recorded sounds.
